Maternity and birth: supplementary insurance compared

Supplementary insurance may pay lump sums or contributions for pregnancy and birth, for example for birth preparation, midwives or breastfeeding advice. Waiting periods matter: if you take out a policy during pregnancy you often have no claim. Also check which hospital ward is insured for the birth.

Information only, not advice, no guarantee. The insurers' own documents are authoritative.

How we rank

  1. Waiting period in months (lower is better)
  2. Birth preparation amount (higher is better)
  3. Home birth (higher is better)
