How we compare
This page describes how the values on Kleingedruckt come about, how the ranking is built and where the limits are.
Sources
The basis is the publicly available documents of the insurers: general insurance conditions (AVB), supplementary conditions (ZB) and benefit overviews. They are fetched from the addresses on file on the insurers' websites, respecting each website's robots.txt. For every value we show the document, the edition (year), the page and a verbatim quote.
A statement such as "insured" or "not insured" is only published with a quote. If the documents say nothing about a benefit, it reads "not mentioned". That does not mean the benefit is excluded.
Extraction and checks
An AI language model reads the documents and returns, for each benefit, the value and the quote that supports it. The quote must appear word for word in the document; this is checked automatically against the text of the stated page. A second, separate pass checks every value against the text of the cited page.
A value is accepted automatically when the second pass agrees with high confidence. In all other cases the operator checks the value by hand, for example when the quote cannot be found, the check disagrees or confidence is not high. The operator then approves, corrects or rejects the value. Only automatically accepted, approved and corrected values are publicly visible. So not every value is checked by hand, but every value can be verified through its quote.
How the ranking is built
For each category an order of attributes is set, for example the annual maximum first and then the share covered. Each attribute has a direction: "higher is better" or "lower is better". Products are ordered by the first attribute; on a tie the next one decides. If everything is still equal, the products share the same rank (marked "=") and are listed alphabetically by insurer and product.
Where higher is better, an unlimited benefit counts for more than any number. An explicitly not insured benefit is the worst value. Values that are not mentioned or not comparable come last. For each product we name the attribute because of which it is ahead of the next one.
There is no overall score. The ranking applies only to the attributes shown for the category. Products without a covered benefit in the category do not appear in the ranking; their number is shown.
What we do not compare
Premiums: they depend on age, place of residence and deductible, among other things. On the comparison page you can enter premiums yourself to see differences; these amounts are not checked.
Health declaration and acceptance: whether an insurer accepts you or adds reservations is decided case by case. We cannot predict it.
Independence
Kleingedruckt receives no commissions from insurers or intermediaries, shows no advertising and sets no cookies. Operation is financed by the paid report on your own policy. The website is run by a private individual (see About Kleingedruckt).
Reporting errors
Every value has a "Report an error" link. If a statement does not match the original document, briefly describe what is wrong. The operator checks the report against the document and decides whether the value is corrected or re-checked. A report does not change a value automatically.
Updates
The documents are collected again once a year, each time for the following year's edition. Every statement names the year of the edition ("As of 2026"). Until a new edition has been checked, the last published one stays visible.
Limitations
Only insurers and products we have recorded are included; the overview is not complete. The values come from the published documents. Individual agreements, your policy and reservations are not in them. For your contract, your policy and the conditions that apply to you always count. Kleingedruckt is information, not advice.
Age rules: if you enter an age on the comparison page, we hide benefits that the conditions say do not apply at that age. For children's benefits with no stated age limit we count until the end of the year of the 18th birthday. If your age is above a product's maximum entry age, we point this out.
Quotes are in the document's language. A machine translation is available on request; the original is what counts.
